is the food grade DE different from pool DE?

Yes, different. That looks like what I think of as gardening DE, which hasn't been heat treated. Swimming pool DE has been heat treated, which makes it filter dramatically better, and also makes it a little more dangerous to handle (don't get it on your skin and especially don't breathe in any that becomes airborne).

Jason, thanks for your answer. I use a coffee can to scoop the DE (it was left by prev owner) and I usually get tons of it on my hands. Sounds like i should get some better scoop for this ...
