I would like to put a ball valve on my jet return (and I guess one for the skimmer to while I'm at it). Is there a "special" valve for this or can I just get a 1.5" from Lowe's that will allow me to hook hose on other end?

The ones that are on my pool are the same ones I see at Lowe's.

The ones from Lowes etc. will work, but the Jandy type valves are much better. They don't restrict the flow and they can rebuilt. You could also consider a full port tru-union ball valve.
