Hello and thank you to all who created this site as I can see it will be greatly helpful as we learn this world. We're almost done with construction--coping and tile this week, deck and surface next week and then.....FILLING. Standard brick coping and tile work, 3 sheer descents, pebble finish and we're trying out the new-ish UV system. We were leaning toward salt but heard that the UV system kills all biologicals and is considered the new "green" way. We'll see. Very excited and hoping that Memorial Day weekend will be the "opener". Fitting as we're both retired military!! :-D

UV alone is not enough, you also need to have chlorine in the water. UV will kill anything that goes past the UV light near the pump, but meanwhile the bulk of the water out in the pool is unprotected. By the time you have enough chlorine in the water to keep the bulk of the pool water safe, things are so good that there is little possible improvement for the UV system to make.

You can "search" and read these threads and will hopefully come up to one inescapable realization.....UV in an outdoor pool does very little good. The reasoning and science behind that statement is pretty solid.
I do not have a salt system personally but it is by far the popular choice on this forum. Ask lot's of questions and there are plenty of pool owners here willing to help.
