Algae growth question

In terms of initial algae growth, is it easier for algae to grow on smooth/flat surfaces versus an uneven/gravel surface? Or is the surface type negligible.

Once algae gets a foothold, would the growth rate be slower on uneven/gravel surfaces? Or is it negligible again.

Any of the common pool surfaces will be about the same in practice. A smooth/flat surface is slightly easier to keep clean and is slightly better at promoting good water circulation, but the differences are small. If you were thinking about something non-standard like a pile of gravel, with real holes in between the stones, that would cause serious algae issues.
