My heater just stopped working last year .... worked fine in the spring then wouldn't start in the fall. I by-passed all the switches to make heater come on, nothing happened. Am thinking it is the regulator valve. Pilot works fine. New valve is $350 .. can I try to just clean it first? If so, what is the best way to do it?

It could be the pilot generator. Check the voltage coming from the pilot generator. It should match the specs in the manual.
Try tapping the valve. My heater valve doesn't open when the heater (Hayward H300 NG) calls for heat. If I tap the valve (usually use the handle of a screwdriver) it will open. It closes OK, it just doesn't like to open.
