Possible to clean your heater gas regulator valve?

My heater just stopped working last year .... worked fine in the spring then wouldn't start in the fall. I by-passed all the switches to make heater come on, nothing happened. Am thinking it is the regulator valve. Pilot works fine. New valve is $350 .. can I try to just clean it first? If so, what is the best way to do it?

I got some good tips in this thread last year: post187179.html#p187179 .

If you know your heater make and model, you can probably find the manual on line. The LAARS (now Jandy) manuals have a good troubleshooting section.

    Good luck!

It could be the pilot generator. Check the voltage coming from the pilot generator. It should match the specs in the manual.

Try tapping the valve. My heater valve doesn't open when the heater (Hayward H300 NG) calls for heat. If I tap the valve (usually use the handle of a screwdriver) it will open. It closes OK, it just doesn't like to open.
