A "waste" line for cartridge filter

I am replacing my sand filter with a cartridge filter. One of the advantages of the sand filter was the "waste" position on the multi port valve...I was able to lower the pool level while bypassing the filter. Now that I am installing the cartridge filter, I am thinking of installing a Jandy valve in the line between the pump and the filter for those instances where I need to pump out / lower the water. I am interested in the experts opinion of this approach.

Sounds like a good plan to me. You could just add a "T" and a spigot but it would be slower than the larger valve.
