Backwashing

I have a sand filter and my pressure gauge is currently broken. I thought about running to the pool store and buying a new gauge. What pressure reading typically means it's time to backwash? In the past, I've just backwashed once a week and I'm sure that's not the most effecient way to do it.

The proper time to backwash is when the pressure rises about 6psi over the clean pressure.

So I can go home and backwash, put in the new gauge, and then watch for it to rise 6psi above that level?
