Rheem Gas Pool Heater Making Knocking Sound

My Rheem gas pool heater is making a knocking sound on the inside. It is not giving an error messages and the heater is working. What could be the problem?

The knocking sound you hear is the water boiling inside the heater. It is generally caused by a lack of water flow through the heater.

Clean your pool filter, empty the skimmer basket(s), clean the pump basket, and anything else that might restrict the flow of water though your system.

After doing the above, I'd look into replacing the unitherm gov

Thank you for your help!! I have turned off the heater and have called the service technician. I think it is still under warranty. I hope so!!

My husband called the Rheem dealer and they said we probably had a broken bypass spring. Is it difficult to replace a bypass spring? What would cause the spring to break? The heater is less than 2 years old.

My Hayward heater has a bypass cartridge. It is a single unit that you replace as one piece. It is easy enough to get out, If I thought the spring needed to be replaced, it wouldn't be hard to do.

I don't know how different your rheem is.
