pump won't come on

We vaccumed the other evening until the water got low. Then we left everything hooked up to the skimmer, left the setting on waste, re-filled, and kept it off so we could finish it the next day. Now when I went to go turn the pump on, it won't come on-just a buzzing sound and it seems to keep trying to come on. What could be the problem?

Welcome to TFP!

If the pump ran dry you will need to open up the pump strainer basket, fill it with water, close it up, and then start the pump up. In rare cases you may need to try this more than once before it really gets going.

Another possibility is that the pumps is jammed by something. Can you tell if the motor turns at all when you turn it on?

I finally realized after it came back on and vacuuming for 20 minutes or so and nothing being picked up that there was a blockage of some type of hard material (bark) or something in the vacuum hose.

If it's just buzzing and not rotating, you should try to spin the pump manually. If you remove the back cover on the motor (with the power off of course) there should be a slot in the shaft that you can use a screwdriver in to rotate the shaft. If it rotates smoothly then see #2. :)

Another likely cause is the start capacitor or the centrifugal switch. If that's the case, then leaving everything hooked up after vacuuming was just a coincidence.
