Ahhh - YES THAT IS A BEFORE PICTURE!!! 
Apparently my other pictures didn't show up - sorry for the confusion! But yes, I skimmed all of that sludge out before starting and vacuumed "blindly" with a leaf vac very frequently to try to help the process as much as possible. The fact that the tenants had allowed beer cans to fall in didn't help - I know I caught at least a 24 pack with the leaf vac.

I'm still working on the 'tub ring' stains - 'Pool Stain Treat' in a sock seems to be doing wonders, it just requires a lot of patience and a little elbow grease!
