1 inch tile on the Baja Shelf

Our pool gets tiled tomorrow and my wife and I thought of puting 1 inch porcelain tile on the floor of the Baja Shelf. Pool Builder says it will cost another 2 grand in labor. Shelf size is 17 X 9. We want to do it ourselves. We have tile experiance. isn't it just like laying bathroom tile? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick

In most cases, it is noticeably harder than bathroom tile, though still quite plausible for a DIY job. The key issue is that in nearly any pool you will constantly be running into curved areas, which means lots and lots of tile cutting and some very careful advance work to figure out how to make it look right. A really top notch job will have grout lines following the curves of the pool, which requires advance planning about where to put your bends and how to avoid lots of regions of narrow silvers of tile along transitions.

You also need to be absolutely sure you get the right kind of tile and the right kind of grout, so that it will last under water. But that is the easy part :)
