    Diabetes/health benefit?

The first time I used my hot tub a few years ago I had an interesting experience. I had the temp set at 104* and I stayed in for over 30 minutes. When I got out I felt very weak. I have very mild Type II diabetes and tested my blood glucose level, which was 80. I was suffering from hypoglycemia (unusual for me) which explained the feeling of weakness.

This got me curious and I googled. I found a small study that suggested soaking in a hot tub could lower blood glucose as does exercise. My MD thought it might be increased metabolism from the temperature. ... -diabetes/

I don't know if insurance pays for a hot tub prescription, or if anyone makes a “generic” hot tub (which would have a lower co-pay).

80 mg/dl on your blood sugar is not hypoglycemia. Increasing the temperature of the body does increase metabolism and this burns more blood sugar, but 80 is not low. Low is 69 or below. Sitting in warm water though does cause vasodilatation which lowers blood pressure and makes you feel weak.

My father is borderline diabetic and I believe his doctor told him he should avoid hot tubs.

He uses mine for a few minutes but I keep the temp on the lower side. Maybe 102ish.

It would be very interesting if his dr was incorrect and its actually a benefit.

BTW, I like the spa at around 104. When I get out I am extremely weak. Almost in a coma. LOL.
