    Hayward Superstar Clear filter

    Hi everyone,

We have a Hayward Superstar Clear filter. It is probably about 15 years old. It started to leak early this year after we decided to have the pool service company service the filter as well. When we used to service it ourselves every 3 to 4 months, it never leaked. Is anyone here familiar with this filter and its problems if any? Thanks.

    A Super Star Clear?
Hayward Star Clear, I know. Never heard of a Super Star Clear.

    Where is it leaking?

It is leaking at the clamp area where the O-ring is. I was told that this filter is obsolete.

If the brass sleeve nut and clamp are in good condition, then you may only need to replace the o-ring. While the clamp assembly has been discontinued, the o-ring is still available.

Hayward made several models of the Super Star-Clear cartridge filters.

Do you have the Super Star-Clear: C2000 C3000 C4000 C5000 in Duralon and Perma Glass XL
or the Super Star-Clear C3000S C4000S Stainless Steel?

If you have one of the Duralon and Perma Glass models, I believe they use the same o-ring as the pro-grid, micro clear DE and swimclear cartridge filters and should be readily available on-line. Search for Part # DEX2400K

    Re: Hayward Superstar Clear filter

I have the C4000, not stainless steel. The former pool service company thought it was the O-ring so they sold us an after-the-market O-ring. It worked for a few weeks and it started to leak again. So we put the Hayward O-ring back on and it worked for a couple of months until now. This time around, it does not just seep, it is gushing at the seams where the clamps meet. Maybe the brass clamp and nuts went bad. If so, we were told that they cannot be replaced since Hayward does not make them any longer. Any suggestions where these replacement parts can be purchased?

You should be able to visually determine if the brass sleeve/nut is stripped by looking at the spring. The nut should be tightened until the spring is compressed with the coils touching , but don't overtighten. Inspect the spring after operating the filter for a few minutes to see if the spring is still compressed. One more thing to check. When you assemble the spring, make sure you put the small hole washer on first, then the spring, next the larger hole washer and finally the sleeve nut. The part number for the sleeve nut is DEX2400JN. Part number for a generic replacement sleeve nut is V60-110.

There is a retrofit upgrade kit for the entire clamp assembly available for the swim clear cartridge models and the pro-grids DE models that use this same clamp, but they will not work with the super star-clear models. There may be a replacement clamp assembly part # HAY-051-1795-SSC search for this part number and give them a call to see if they have a replacement for it yet.

Here are a few less expensive things to try before you purchase a new filter.

Purchase a new OEM Hayward o-ring and some lube for the o-ring. Part # DEX2400K
Look for the Silicon based lube such as Jack's No 327 o-ring lube.
Carefully clean and inspect the filter head and the filter body where the o-ring seats.
Clean with a scrub pad to ensure a good tight seal of the o-ring. Look for small cracks or holes in this area.
Apply a small amount of lube around the o-ring.
Carefully assemble the filter head over the tank body.
Be sure not the pinch or tear the o-ring.
Install the clamp, spring and a new sleeve nut assembly. Tighten the 9/16 sleeve nut until the spring coils touch.
Open the air relief valve at the top of the filter. Turn on the pool pump. When all the air has been purged from the filter then close the air relief valve.

Hopefully this will keep the water inside your filter and inside your pool
Please let the forum know if this works. If you are forced to replace your filter, let us know which model you choose and why.

    Re: Hayward Superstar Clear filter

We hired a pool repair company to inspect the filter. They have been in business for about 30 years. He came out this morning and said that there is nothing visually wrong with the unit. There are no cracks, the unit is level, and the brass clamp/nut is not stripped. He inspected the O-ring, both of them, and cleaned them. He put each one on one at a time to see if they fit. The non-Hayward one did not fit right. It is new but never fit right. The pool service company sold me that one. Since he could not tell how old the other one was, he got a new generic O-ring from his truck. He put it on and it works. He said that this O-ring is not exactly round so there is a special way to put it on the filter or it will not seal right. It is unlike other filter units that you can just open it, clean the filters and the O-ring and close it without having any leaks. He does not recommend a Hayward. He recommends Pentair. He also said that the best time to buy a new filter unit is when the filter cartridges need to be replaced since they are almost half the cost of a new filter. That makes sense.

Bad news, it is leaking again this morning. The new O-ring did not work and the pool repair company is having a hard time locating the original Hayward O-ring. We may have to order it online.

The description for DEX2400K is: Filter Tank D-Ring on Hayward's site. Why is it called a D-Ring?

Do you have 2 o-rings between the head and body of the filter?
Information from Hayward shows only 1.
    My pro-grid only has 1.

Try it with only 1 o-ring to see if it seals correctly

There is only 1 O-ring for the filter unit. We have 2 because we were sold another one earlier this year that did not work and it is not the original Hayward brand.

I found the paperwork for the old O-ring. It came with installing instructions. But the part number is DE2400K. Is that the same as DEX2400K?

OEM Hayward o-rings are no longer available through the normal parts wholesalers that most pool stores use.

Here are some on-line sources for the OEM Hayward o-rings

There are dozens of On-line sources for the generic replacement by Aladdin part number 0-429
but I would use the Hayward brand as long as they are available, even if it means paying a few more dollars.

Is there some type of blockage in the filter or piping that causes the pressure to rise and put extra stress on the filter?
Hopefully your pool tech can detect the problem.

    Re: Hayward Superstar Clear filter

Thanks for the online sources. I will check into them. it does not hurt to stock on a a few while they are still available somewhere. Meanwhile, the pool repair company found the part, came over, was going to install it but before he did, he tightened the nuts on the clamp a little more and it quit leaking. We decided to leave it alone to see if that fixed the problem and for how long.
