swimming pool covers???

We are looking to get a tarp style cover with water bags to hold it down. This is our first season with a pool. So, my question is what do we do otherwise once we cover it? Still run the filter and salt system? Is there any extra care that should be given or done before and while it is covered?

First time SWG pool owners. Pool will be built late this season before winter. We've opted not to get a cover for initial cost, weren't sure whether we needed... no experience yet. Don't anticipate having many trees/leaves to worry about. No pets. Kids are 4 and 7... would teach them not to play near pool. Should we opt for a loop-loc cover after all or is there a "cheap" alternative over first winter until we truly understand what we need? Thanks.
