Not sure if this helps but i've been buying the cheap $12 solar spot lights from Home Depot for accenting trees and what not. These lights, if they get enough daylight really work well for smaller applications. Even in the winter they would shine bright for most of the night. Cheap alternative if you don't wanna run wires and such.

I vote for hardwired LED. Solar does give you a easier and quickier install without running all the cables. You want a light right there.....bam!!! stik in the ground and your done. Now you have all those batteries to deal with and the light output is not the same. I triied the solar and did not have very good luck.
