A friend with a pool suggested that I put a piece of copper in my skimmer basket to control algae. Apparently they do this and never have a problem whereas I have direct sunlight all day and when I have a problem it really becomes a problem fast. Does anyone know if this works and what are the downfalls to doing this?

Copper in the water an cause unsightly stains that are difficult (sometimes impossible) to remove, which is why we never recommend the use of copper. While copper can help slow down algae growth, chlorine alone is sufficient if you maintain an appropriate FC level. The specific approach you suggested, simply putting a piece of solid copper in the skimmer also suffers because it doesn't give you any meaningful control over the copper level in the water.
