How long can a pool sit empty after plaster is chipped out?

Our (well recommended, current licensed) replaster/retile contractor chipped out the plaster and removed the tile on July 6. It's now July 16, and the pool is still an empty hole, because the tile guy hasn't shown up. Every time we call the contractor, we're told that the tile guy is showing up "for sure tomorrow". We foolishly didn't put a clause in the contract about date of completion  so I suspect we keep getting shoved out of the way by bigger jobs.

Does leaving the pool shell in this state cause any harm to the pool? Can we sit tight for now, or do we need to call other contractors to get the job taken care of quickly?

The only good news is that the delay means that the replaster itself will miss the heat spike. The bad news is that we're going to be huddling inside this weekend. :grrrr:

Pretty much indefinitely. You now have a giant concrete bunker ( ) instead of a swimming pool.

Sorry to hear that the pool is down during the heat wave, but you have no worries. I've had them sit for years while other work is completed (like in the case of a house being scraped and a new one being built; the pool gets prepped and just sits until the new home is completed.) so you are perfectly fine.
