main drain?

We drained our pool to do an acid wash and filled it back up to just one inch above the main drain cover, but there's no suction from the main drain even though the motor seems to be working perfectly.

What can be the problem? Does the whole pool need to be refilled before it would work?

Does the main drain have a separate line to the pump that can be isolated (i.e. not plumbed through the skimmer)? Also, if the main drain is fairly deep below the pump, the pump will have a hard time priming and pumping. Suction lift is usually limited to less than 8 feet and some pumps have trouble at 6 feet.
