Slightly Confused

Ok so my Hayward pump spec plate shows 70 GPM, my sand filter literature shows "design flow rate 67 GPM", and it's hard piped with 1 1/2" Sch40 PVC, which according to Hayward has a "maximum recommended system flow rate of 45 GPM". Someone please decipher all this for me, since it appears nothing I have seems to correspond with another component! :?: :?: :?:

to put it bluntly...the pump is oversized...but it won't hurt anything...it's just not optimal

I figured it was too big. I'm not sure why pool manufacturers think bigger is better. I'm thinking of cutting in another return this winter, to help get that water moving. All that HP and only one return, kind of dumb if ya ask me!!!
