CYA

Hi Everyone,

First I have to thank the answers I got on this site my pool is better then ever. One question- my CYA has been creeping up. It was 50 now its 70 I am using bleach. What causes the rise? The pool calculator wants me to replace 43% of the water. Im thinking I should do a CYA test on my fill water first.

Your fill water doesn't have CYA in it. CYA is added only in stabilized chlorine like trichlor and dichlor, or directly in stabilizer/conditioner.

and I try to see that black dot .. you know if you look real hard you may be able to add more fluid and bring the CYA down .. it is a funky test i guess as good as your eyes are

Well, as JohnT mentioned, have you added any stabilized chlorine?

You could order a CYA standard solution test to verify your CYA test results.

Consistency in testing is very important, like testing around the same time of day in the same lighting.

I find that wiggling the tube a little helps me identify the black dot when it's mostly obscured but not completely.

Another suggestion is to do the test, then pour the water back into the container and do it a second time. Then pour it back and have someone else do it; don't tell them your result so you don't bias their findings. The two of you should get more or less the same result.
