Shut off valves?

Hi all. I have yet another question about my AGP. My filter pump setup is connected with clear tubing, and everything is connected to each other directly. I have seen mention of shut off valves being used and I am thinking that this is something I should invest in. Since my pull is set up, is this something I should wait to do till next year, and also, what do I need to do this right?

Right now the skimmer attaches to a hose that connects directly to the pump. The pump has a clear tube that connects to the filter, and then the filter connects to the air jet in the pool.
