CYA Reading

3.5 lbs of CYA finished dissolving in my skimmer yesterday evening. What's the likelihood that I could get an accurate reading if I took a water sample to the pool store this morning?

minimal.
Assume your level is whatever your target is.
So if you added enough to reach 30, your level is 30...and adjust FC levels accordingly.

Even if it looks like its dissolved, chances are it isnt, a lot will be in the filter, the rest will just be suspended in the water. After say 5 days or so you should get a accurate reading. Just assume its what you aimed at for now, then retest next week.

Correct. You'll likely flush a bunch of it away.

If you need to add CYA and think you may also need to backwash, it would be better to add it with a sock hanging in front of a return.

You will still lose some CYA when backwashing, just minimal amount that you would ordinarily lose anytime you backwash.
