Aqua Trol Return jet install question

Can a Aqua Trol RJ be hard plumbed 1 1/2 PVC to the return jet. I think I see it comes with hose type unions for the return, but other configurations? 1 1/2" or 2" PVC?

Perhaps all I need is to buy some standard 2" unions and reduce it down to 1 1/2". Will a standard 2" union thread onto the cell? Much cheaper to buy the RJ than the HP model.

The AquaTrol is designed to connect to either 2" rigid or 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" flexible. If you are using 1 1/2" rigid, I would connect a short piece of 2" pipe to the AquaTrol and then reduce it to 1 1/2" to connect to your existing pipe.
 
I see that applies to the HP model, but does that also apply to the return jet (RJ) model? Any adapters or unions included other than the hose type? Or will I have to buy slip type 2" unions and use just the one half?
