spa management for spa at vacation home

I have a portable spa located at a vacation home. It can be up to 3 weeks between visits. What is the best way to manage spa chemicals when long periods of no maintenance happen regularly?

So far, I've used chlorine and shocked it when I leave. I've turned off the heater (summer) or left it at 70 degrees for winter. So far, no real troubles, but perhaps there is a better way than what I am doing.

    Thanks, Larry

Rola-Chem chlorine pump (and tank), Pentair DE "Quad 80" cartridge filter, 400K BTU gas heater, VF Whisperflo, and Legend Pressure Side Cleaner with Pentair booster pump. Using TFTestKit.

You could try using bromine instead of chlorine; check out this thread.
