Can you identify this coating on my pool deck?

I have an area on my 4 yr old pool that has part of the "coating" coming off of it. This coating appears to be put onto normal concrete probably for slip resistance and it definitely keeps the surface cool in the summer.

    1. What is it?

    2. How do I keep the shown damaged area from getting worse?

Is there any way for you to post a picture of this?

Where are you located? That might help narrow it down.

    You're done SLAMing when:
    1)You lose 1ppm or less FC overnight, & 2)You have .5ppm CC's or less, & 3)your water is clear.

It looks like kool deck that had too much water in the mix and they didn't knock it down. It might be just one bad area or could be a wider spread problem. It can be patched.

Or it could have been caused by me. I had a plastic snow shovel out on that area earlier this winter removing snow. The damage is certainly new (this winter) and small at this point.

    You didn't cause it.

It delaminated from the bond failing. Any bond will eventually fail when exposed to freeze/thaw cycles, its a matter of how many cyles it can withstand. It could have just been that area. You could tap it with the plastic end of a screwdriver to see how widespread the problem is. The sound will be very different where it has delaminated.

My PB talked me out of Kool Deck - said it doesn't "weather " in the northeast and can't handle the freezing winters. Im wondering if the delamination might be caused by ice?

Re: Can you identify this coating on my pool deck?

The delamination is caused by either water penetration or differences in expansion rates between the deck and the coating and then penetration. Once the coating looses elasticity, it's all over at that location. It is patchable. Eventually though, it will be time to redo it.

I will say that I am a VERY big fan of the way the deck feels in the summer. I never knew what the product was but we have always been amazed at how comfortable it is to walk on. Even if it is 110F outside.
