We bought a house built @1990 with an inground pool. Cleaned up the swampy water. installed a new pump and filter. Only have one question. There is a cover plate under the skimmer basket that has a swivel Open/close lid. What is the function of the lid under the skimmer basket?

There are often two pipes entering the bottom of a skimmer. One goes to the pump. The other might not be connected to anything, might be blocked, or might be connected to the main drain, or an in wall drain. There are various devices, often involving swivels, that can be installed in the bottom of the skimmer that allow you to get some control over how much water the pump draws from the skimmer and how much it draws from the other pipe.
