Cleaning with Solar Cover On?

I have always used my suction side pool vac with the solar cover off. My thought was the hose floats a bit and this would allow for better movement of the vac. My question is does the solar cover HAVE to be off?

Ran the vac today for 4 hours and i have more bugs on the pool surface now then stuff that I was trying to get off the bottom of the pool. :rant:
 
How much does the hose stick up? The more of it that is above the water, the more the cover would interfere.

I run my pressure-side cleaner with the cover on and it has not been a problem; but I'm guessing it's a smaller hose than a suction cleaner would use.
