    Welcome to TFP!

Hard to say. Your pump is bigger than it needs to be, but there are many possible reasons for the sand in the pool. Wrong sand in the filter, too much sand in the filter, bad multiport gasket and damaged filter laterals are possibilities. Is this a new install or a new problem?
