How loud should a pump be?

Just how loud should the pump be?

We just installed a 1hp 2 speed pump. On low, the pump sounds good and quiet...on high the thing is so loud I feel it would disturb the neighbours....Like a loud air conditioner. Is this normal?

    Yes.

I run my pump on low 24/7 and only use high speed when I need to vacume.
