Skimmer Wear plate when closing pool

Should I remove the skimmer flapper "wear" when closing my inground pool for winter in the North East?

I've not heard of anyone doing that. Shouldn't be necessary.

I don't know if it's necessary, but mine comes out so darn easy I take it out and store it for the winter.

Mine comes out easy, so I always take it out. My pool freezes solid, and I would think there would be a risk of damage to it if I left in.
