Hello, I have seen this issue addressed in other posts but not exactly like my situation. I have a vinyl lined inground pool, with a Hayward sand filter. I will lose about 3 inches overnight if we turn the filter off. If we leave the filter on all day and all night we don't lose anything. 3 inches of water is a lot and we cannot figure out where it is leaking from, and where is this water going? Any advice on how to diagnose the leak? Thanks so much

when you are running your pump, is air coming out of the return(s)?
Is suspect that you have a suction side leak.

There are no air bubbles coming out of the returns. Also, no telltale water spots on the lawn or around the deck that would indicate where this water is going. Or coming from.
Agreed, it is likely a leak on the suction side underground. Elbows under skimmers are the culprit sometimes.
This may be a silly question ... But does that mean I hire a pool guy to come take a look at it? Is there anything a homeowner can do to try and figure out where the leak is if it's underground?
Leak detection companies have special equipment that tracks down leaks.

I hope you don't mind me side-tracking this a bit, but I don't understand how the pool DOESN'T leak with the filter on, but does when it's off. When the filter is off, is the pump off too?
Sometimes the ground water and dirt will sort of plug the hole when the pump is running and let it trickle out when the pump is off. I saw one suction leak that wouldn't leak for the first 30-60 min because it would suck all the leaked water back in and once it was gone it would start sucking air. Suction leaks can be weird and hard to find.
