This SWG is driving me insane.

The story is too long to tell, so lets start at the point I was given the task of maintianing the pool about 5 weeks ago. The sales rep from the SWG system recommended these settings: ORP1 735, feed time 900sec (15min), ORP2 680 (liquid CHL backup) feed @ 180 secs, PH @7.3. After two weeks of operation I was blasting thru 11 gals of liquid CHL. ORP1 never reached 735. Changed ORP2 to 630 @180 sec of feed time. The controller runs for 20 cycles before going into alarm, example 10 min feed with 5 min delay equals 1 cycle.
Thes are the results for the last 3 weeks:

Mon 8am controller in alarm with ORP between 640-655, I reset
    Mon 4pm ORP 605-610
    Tue 8am ORP 575-600
Tue sometime between 12pm and 3pm goes into alarm with ORP between 575-605, I reset
    Wed 8am ORP 575-600
    Wed 4pm ORP 575-600
    Thur 8am ORP 575-600
Thur sometime between 10am and 12pm goes into alarm with ORP between 575-600, I reset
    Fri 8am ORP 575-600
    Fri 4pm ORP 575-600

Factory setting for ORP is 650 so why does the sales rep recommend 735?

In testing the water here are the numbers and they have remained constant throughout the 3 weeks,
    CHL 10-12ppm
    PH 7.5
    ALK 60-70
    CYA 30-40
Calcium Hardness ranges between 360 to 420ppm
    and the salt is 4200

Why can't I get this controller to stabilize? Why does the ORP go up to 650 over the weekend?
If you add the numbers 15min feed with 5min delay = 20 mins X 20 cycles = 400 mins = 6 hr and 40 mins, then this sytem should go into alarm as it never reached 735.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

You are going to get tired of this, but get a recommended test kit. Your values are not useful, ranges don't mean anything.

Also, what does semi-public pool mean?

I agree you need a good test kit.

Also note that we generally do not recommend the use of ORP automation for FC. It just is not typically reliable.

Re: This SWG is driving me insane.

The pool is located in a Condo Complex and only owners of the complex have access, thus the designation by Maricopa County of a semi-puplic pool. I have a Taylor K-2005 test kit and also have it tested by a pool store once a week plus the pool cleaning company tests 3 times a week. The Chl level has been either 10 ppm or 12 ppm thruoghout the 3 weeks, Ph has been 7.5 every day but 2 when it was 7.4. The odd thing to me is why does the ORP raise from 575 to 650 between Fri. nite and Mon. morning? Occupant load remains constant, until all the snow birds come back.

That test kit is missing the required FAS-DPD chlorine test. And pool store testing is basically considered worthless around here.

I do not know enough about orp readings to help.

Using FAS-DPD kit. FC 6, CC .5, PH 7.5, ALK 60, CYA 40 and Salt @ 4200. ORP1 set @650 for 15 mins, left work Fri. nite ORP was reading 595. At 8am this morning, ORP reading 640 in alarm. It takes 26hrs 40 mins to go thru full round of cycles before it goes into alarm. So If i reset @ 5pm, then around 8pm Sat. nite it would go into alarm, which it did, (had a resident check for me, ORP @585). Now the ORP slowly raises to 645 on Mon. morning. This is what does not make sense to me.

ORP of 720mv is usually recommended. Probably why 735 was set. It can also depend on your probe type.
    So ORP1 is the SWG? I show 3 SG 5000 product 6.9lbs a day. So ~1hr for 1ppm=4 cycles

Sounds like something is happening Fri to Mon. Can you take a test reading Fri and another Mon and compare?

More info, in learning about this system, it came to light that the ORP probe is not the right probe, got the Gold tip probe (for SWG's) Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning the ORP was @ 720. Using FAS-DPD, FC 7.2, CC .4, PH 7.5, ALK 50, CYA 30. The setting for ORP1 (SWG) is 735 with feed time @ 3 mins. Looks like I might be headed in the right direction. Question I have is why when the cells turn on, does the ORP level go down? Ran cell for 6 hrs and the ORP went from 720 to 675, then unplugged cells for 6 hrs, ORP went from 675 to 715. HUH?

You are measuring with the probes before the swg right?

Yes, the supply line for the probes is located between pump and filter, the cells are located after heater/chillers before returning to pool. Yesterday with the ORP set at 1 min feed time, the level went from 715 in the morning to 635. So at 6pm I turned off power to cells, this morning at 8am level at 700. Plugged in cells dropped to 650 in 1 hr.

Re: This SWG is driving me insane.

Last night 5:30pm ORP reading 655, TC @1.6 ppm and .2 CC, PH 7.5, ALK 50, CYA 30. ORP is set for 720 with a 1 min feed time. This morning @ 8am system was in fault, ORP reading 780, TC 2.6 ppm, CC .2, PH 7.5, ALK 50, CYA 30 and Salt @ 3800. I am pleased that the ORP is high, but with the system running, ORP hovers around 650, when the system goes into fault and shuts down over night the ORP raises. Is there any way I can lengthen out the 5 min time out period?

Re: This SWG is driving me insane.

I have been able to stabilize the pool by running the cells @ 25%. Basically I run the cells through a full cycle then shut them off, which keeps the ORP @ 730 with the TC @ 1.8, CC @ .2, PH 7.5, ALK 50, CYA 40 and Salt 3800. I just thought I would get more feedback and or ideas on the subject being there is more than 700 views. If anyone knows about the ROLA-CHEM Model RC554XXP Dual ORP/Ph Controller and if the time out period can be lengthen, please contact me.

Not too many people deal with ORP in a residential pool and your title did not mention ORP, so I would expect next to no replies in your thread. Good luck getting it figured out.

Ping, that is understandable being that when I started this thread, I thought the cells were bad, only to find out the wrong probe was installed. I got a couple calls into Rola-Chem, but have not heard from them. The residents here have stated the pool has never looked better, so I am on the right track.
