Was hoping someone could clear this up for me. I work in the industry and the powers that be recommend an alkalinity level of 120-140 ppm for a vinyl pool. Is there any merit to this? If so, why? I'm trying my best to give people advice based on the TFP methods so I'm trying to weed out the Baloney Sandwich.

That is likely too high. We generally find that TA over 80 or 90 will cause PH to rise. Of course, lowering PH with muriatic acid also lowers TA and you get in a vicious circle. We typically say TA as low as 50 is fine if PH is stable, or 60 if PH jumps around d a bit at 50. The best bet in most cases is to add acid to keep PH in line and let TA end up where it ends up.
