draining (for dummies or maybe just newbies

It's been raining so much, I had to drain some water out of my pool. I actually did it. But, I'm not sure I shouldn't have done some things differently. Couldn't find a good youtube video. I have a cartridge filter, so I don't backwash and I don't have a setting for that. I just opened up the drain and water came out. Everything seems to be working okay. But, should I have turned off the jets and skimmers? Or, turned the filter off?

I'm always worried about tearing up something expensive

You removed the drain plug from the bottom of the cartridge filter? That is ok. I would turn the pump off to take out the plug and put it back in. Or you could open the air relief valve on the top of the cartridge filter and let water shoot out of there for a while.
