These just appeared one day. They are small, like the outline of a match head, and orange in color. They are a bear to remove. I got after them with some scotchbrite and didn't so much as lighten them up. Any ideas?
Small circular stains on stairs

I hit it with some Vitamin C pills and all the elbow grease I could muster. They may have lightened a tad, but not much. I would say they didn't react strongly to that at all.
They definitely look like rust. Try leaving ascorbic acid on the spots for about 30 minutes.
How can rust just appear like that? There weren't any metal objects on the stairs. I do have metals in the pool that I have to maintain with sequestrants.
