Curious about raising PH

I'm using an aeration method to raise my PH. I used PoolMath to check quantities for some of my other numbers but I noticed under PH it says to add either soda ash or borate.

Is this a short cut to raising your PH? I'm going to stick with aeration rather than add stuff to the pool, but I was just curious.
