Significant amount of air coming into pump

HI,

Hoping some one can help. We have below ground pool with buried pipework. We noticed the level going down and dug the pipework up, we found a corroded skimmer basket connection. The other basket appeared to have already previously been replaced with a plastic one. The water level is now stable with no signs of a leak and all was going well. We back filled the trenches then found that the pump started to pull in large amounts of air. We can see it coming into the pump at the pump window. (the skimmers are well covered)

I can't find a leak at the pump or at any of the connections. Is there any possibility that air can be being drawn in from any of the underground pipes even if there is no evidence of a leak? Really don't want to dig it all back out again! We have asked a local pool company and they say it must be between the wall where the return pipe comes out and the first part of the pump. They don't think they can help and have suggested replacing the pump.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Damian
