No free or total chlorine

Opened pool in early may. Chlorine levels were fine. Past 2 weeks we cannot get a reading for free or total chlorine and neither can our pool store. Pool has been shocked numerous times. We are using 3" chlorine tabs from leslies, 90% total chlorine through the skimmer. We've also had problems with staining (metal) and discoloration of steps and certain areas of pool. Have added a concentrated ascorbic acid stain remover, followed up with a "metal free" solution as directed. It states that it does not affect chlorine and is phosphate free. Pool is crystal clear and has been, even without a chlorine reading. Also wondering if the salt cell is causing the discoloration.

Hello and welcome to TFP! I think you can rule-out the salt cell as a contributor to your staining issues. Staining will be one of two things - metals or organic. You appear to have been managing your chlorine a bit different than we normally do here at TFP by using tabs/pucks, however if your swimming season is short up there you may get away with it. But one thing we need to know first are your test results. I suspect the constant use of tabs and bags of pool store shock have driven your CYA too high. But to confirm we need those test results. We'd ideally try to ensure all algae is removed first so that you can adjust the chemicals for proper metal treatment and sequestrants.

Do you have a TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C to post results for us?
