Hi! I am a wife and mom of 2 hoping for a cool summer in our new Summer Waves Elite 18' x 48" pool. My head is spinning with all of the information I have read to help with a smooth set up (which has been anything but smooth). I am planning on using the original filter pump that came with the pool in addition to an Intex saltwater pump. Any guidance or advice is welcomed!

I'm not sure how much you've read into Pool School but there is a wealth of information in there. Get the basics from ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry and move onto other articles such as Recommended Test Kits, Recommended Chemicals and the Chlorine/CYA chart.
The best thing you can do for you pool is invest in a good home test kit, such as the TF-100 from tftestkits.net. We can really only give you specific advise based on results from using this test kit or the similar Taylor K-2006 kit. Pool store testing is inconvenient and not reliable.
