It all appears to be algae, I've tried feeling it with my fingers and have felt nothing coarse. When I backwash the filter I see a few sand kernels in the sight glass but when I rinse they go away. Is that normal?

Mine has been that way for a while. It has never increased in the last two years, so I didn't find it to be a problem.
