It seems like a simple question, but I'm sure there is a hidden "gotcha" somewhere!

Allow me to ask a stupid question...WHY ARE THERE NO PUCKS w/o stabilizer (CYA)?

Because chlorine is a gas at standard temperatures and pressures. So in order to get chlorine into a usable form, it has to be bound to something. Chemically speaking, chlorine can only form a few different compounds based on its atomic structure and so there a limited ways it can be used. Chlorine forms the hypochlorite ion (OCl-) which is chlorine and oxygen bound together. The hypochlorite ion can react with different metals (sodium, calcium, lithium, etc) to form liquid and/or solid compounds. Chlorine itself can be bound to organic molecules to form halogenated (chlorine is a "halogen") organic compounds. The safest of those to use in pools is chlorine bound to cyanurates (stabilizer or CYA).

So, because of the chemical nature of chlorine, there are limitations in forming compounds that are both safe to handle and effective at delivering chlorine in a form that can sanitize.

Thanks for the insight! I follow what you said, however they do manufacture powder form bound with lithium, so is there a reason that powder form cannot be "pucked"?
