How to clear your pool, aka Taking one for the team!

Ok, ordered a new motor and seal, should be here in 1-5 days. The whole point of this thread was to demonstrate how easy the SLAM process is, and despite my irregular dosing of the pool (which is how most working folks conduct a slam) I was making good progress. To reassure those who are new and think running the pump 24/7 was responsible for its demise, it was not. I have been having issues with this pump starting for the past year. It just finally gave out.

Had I been planning to stay in this house more than a year or two I would have upgraded to a better quality pump with more serviceable parts. This will be the 3rd motor in 6 years on this particular pump. My original pump of the same model and brand lasted 4 years before it rusted out.

Anyway, I will be swishing bleach in the water for the next couple of days. I may drop my Pool Rover Jr in there an let him stir it up. I think I managed to get enough of the heavy debris out before the pump died.

My photo timeline of my SLAM this spring. First 3 pictures are the first 3 weeks (too cold to get in and vacuum properly) last two are before and after sand filter deep clean.

Yes, the bane of my existence. Between it and the oak tree my pool gets a steady diet of tree debris.

Had a mesquite tree like that....chainsaw took care of it.

I have a crepe myrtle as well but it is waaaaaaaaaay set back from the pool. My biggest trouble right now is a Texas Ranger that has gotten overgrown after years of neglect. There's a very severe pruning in its future when the weather cools.

Most of the crepe myrtle is on my neighbors side of the fence. I've got a tree guy coming this week to trim everything back.

:goodjob:

I have a row of nine mulberry trees out front. They grew so unruly that I finally broke down and hired an arborist last fall to trim them. When his crew was done they looked like trunks with twigs sticking out of them. He saw the look of shock in my face and said, "wait till the spring, you'll see!"

Well, the spring came and the trees grew into perfect ball-shaped canopies. It was impressive and looks a million times better.

Good luck with that. Trimming a crepe myrtle will work perfectly....until it grows back bigger and thicker next season!

Woody....does that mean that one can lose their MOD status if their pool turns green? :)

Boy, you know if you want this thread to be REALLY complete and helpful, you are going to need to have more than a swamp and dead motor happen. We need suspicious water loss, staining, tingling when touching the railing and a few inconsistent bouts of optimism followed by not several periods of not listening to all the good advice you've been given - and refusal to get a proper test kit. But in the end you listen to Dave (with his infinite patience), overcome and get a sparkly pool. Then we'll call it a teachable moment.

BTW - This thread may need a bigger DISCLAIMER - MUCH BAD ADVICE GIVEN IN JEST ON THIS THREAD. Mixed with a Mod really trying to show how to do a SLAM while life happens.

New motor and seal arrived last night. After I finish up dealing with TDOT and the county to renew my son's car registration I am going to get it swapped out. If I can get a helper to wake up long enough I'll video the process to share with one and all!

We once supported the Indigenous People population in Louisiana by staying the weekend at their fine hotel and casino establishment. The breakfast buffett had an all you can eat bacon bar. We may have single handedly wiped out the entire supply of bacon that morning!

3rd try is the charm! Finally got the new registration after 3 trips!
