Pool pump sucking air when first turned on

Hello, I am new to the pool ownership world so please be patient. I have an above ground pool with a cartridge type filter. The pump and filter work great once they are turned on and the air is leaked out of the system. However, when I first turn the pump on in the morning. It has a tendency to get air in it and I have to turn the valve on the filter to let air out. The air will bleed out and a steady stream of water will come from the valve. After that, all works great. This doesn't seem like a normal process to me. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

It sounds like you have a small (Probably suction side) leak.

When the pump is turned off, this leak allows air to get in the system and your water drains back to the pool.

Frankly, aside from being annoying, it is not harmful.

There is an article on suction side leaks in Pool School....it may help

How long is the time between pump turn-on and when it starts to operate normally?
