Recirculating pool while replacing sand in sand filter

I have a Triton TR 60 sand filter and I am replacing sand, I noticed one of the laterals is damaged and I had to order a new one. Can I run the multi port valve on recirculate without putting the sand filter back together?

I believe that you could, even if the valve is not attached to the filter. I have not done it before, so be ready to switch the pump off quickly if I prove to be wrong!
