Hello Everyone!

Glad to have found this site! I'm in the 1st stages of planning a new inground pool. 1st problem we encounters is our overhead electric. Looks like we're going to have to bury the line since it crosses over my backyard. Anyway I'm hoping to get some intial feedback about pool shape and size. Retangle vs mountain pool. And 14x28 vs 16x32. We're kinda limited with the width since my backyard narrows at one point to 38'. We need to be 15' from neighbors / fence as per Brookhaven town regulations.

I personally feel a rectangle pool gives you more usable room in a pool for games and actual swimming. I liken it to a "classic shape"
The curvy pools can be aesthetically pleasing but you lose some space and they are more difficult to cover in your cold winters. Either way I'd say get as big a pool as you can fit in! And lots of pool decking around it.

You may want to consider now how you want to sanitize your water (salt water generators are *very* popular) and you will want to consider your pool depths. Shallower for more play, deeper for diving and swimming? What sort of things do your family like to do in a pool?

There's not a short answer to that question. Here are the details to determine your diving envelope based on your pool type. Drastically simplified, the depth required is around 8' unless your diving platform is very high off the ground (deeper is always safer in that regard). And that depth must extend out a certain distance. Then the slope must not exceed X over a certain length. Then you want a shallow area of some size. Generally the very shortest you will see a diving pool is around 32' - 34' long to accommodate those requirements. And not usually skinnier than 15'.

Wow, that was fast!

Im putting in a 14x28 rectangle similar to you. I'm going down to 6 feet for activities, but not deep enough for diving (pool isn't quite long enough).

looking forward to seeing your pool progress. What are you doing for tile, concrete, etc?
 
Yeah they ripped it up fast considering all the roots in my backyard- a full truck load UGH! I had a large oak and pine tree removed last year. I'm thinking a concrete deck, stained gray. My pool contractor told me to wait until next spring after the ground settles ...

Its a Vinyl lined pool.

I waited until the next spring to put down patio. If I may suggest, buy cheap tarps at the store and cut it into strips 2 - 3 feet wide and pay them around the edge of the pool (pin down with landscape pins or even rocks). I learned the hard way that once the dirt puddles into mud the water that splashed up during a moderate rainfall will be muddy water ;) The pool water literally turned brown right before my eyes (took a day to filter it clean). Once I laid down the tarp it wasn't an issue. You could also lay a truck load of pea gravel. I put a 4x8 piece of plywood at the stairs with an outdoor carpet over it. It was amazing to see the drop/settling of the backfill after the first heavy rain! We could have laid a patio in October/November as it seemed to settle all is was going to but I was glad to get a winter's worth of snow on it melting just to be sure. Plus I had budgeted to do the patio that next spring (went with pavers on 1/4 and grass on 3/4 of it).
