Screeching Motor

I need help! Thanks to this site, I have been able to fire my pool guy to do the water maintenance. However, the motor is now making a screeching load sound when it is running. It is pumping water through the filter. We bought this house about 1 yr & 1/2 ago. I didn't build it. It's been here since the 80s as far as I can tell. The equipment was replaced since. The motor supposedly was replaced 3 or 4 years ago. From searching here, it sounds like it may be the bearings. The first pool guy that has come says I have to replace the motor. He's also quoting me an exaggerated price since I've looked it up online and I can buy the same one for under $300. I need to know what I should be asking and what to be aware of. Also, should I be considering a variable speed? Let me give you some I idea of what I have (as best as I can tell).

Pool: 30K gallons (no spa)
Filter: Hayward (Blue Haven Pools), 4 cartridges
Pump: Hayward (SPA020X252NC), can't really tell anything else, very large filter basket compared to what I used to have in my old home
Motor: A.O Smith 7-193687-02, 2HP
Cleaner: Dolphin M5 Robtic cleaner
Location: Dallas, TX (we don't winterize, run about 5 hours in winter, up to 12 hours in the heat of summer)

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Just had a pool repair guy come by. He suggested changing out the motor and the pump as these are very old and hard to find replacement parts for the pump, etc. Yikes. He would recommend changing to a 2HP Pentair motor and pump and would charge me $950 installed. Not the news I was hoping for. I don't want to cheap out either as I would rather make sure this thing works for the long run. And, I do worry that I don't have much history about this equipment.

That is a Hayward Northstar Pump. It is likely that parts will be very hard to come by.

If you do replace the pump, there is no need to go with a 2 HP pump based on the description of your pool. You don't have a spa or other features that you might want a higher flow rate for. The size and type of motor that I would consider would be a 1 to 1.5 HP pump in a two-speed or variable speed option. The ability to run at a lower speed can save you money on electricity. If you were to ever add a salt water chlorine generator, that might necessitate longer pump run times. Being able to do so at a lower speed is very helpful. If you're going to work with that pool guy and he's fond of Pentair, that is a good brand. I'd look at the SuperFlo pumps from them in the 2 speed and variable speed varieties in the 1.5 HP range.

If you go with a VS pump, they are more sensitive to power outages and surges, so some surge protection installed with the pump is advised.

If you could add the details about your pool that you've already posted to your forum signature, that would help give you better advice on what pump to get. Details about your pool surface (vinyl, plaster?) also help.

EDIT:

Pricing example for 2-speed SuperFlo

Plus the speed switch apparently:
