Aqua Genie Losing Prime

Hello All. Have had a trouble free Aqua Genie experience for 20 years- until now. I lose prime as soon as I begin to vacumn in normal manner. If I remove the basket and connect hose directly into suction inlet at bottom of AG it seems to work fine. Suggestions?
 
Is it possible there's a small hole in your vacuum hose a few inches above the collar that when plugged into the vac plate is above the waterline sucking air? The problem would be alleviated when plugged directly In the bottom. Check that.
