Pool light went out while draining pool

Draining my pool right now to fix CYA levels, and just when the water level got below the light, the light went out. Won't turn back on. Think there is something that actually requires water contact or something like that going on or just a coincidence and now I need a new light, too?

They require water for cooling. You likely blew the bulb from overheating.

Yup. Fixture is flooded to stay cool. Never turn on your light unless its submerged. At least now you get to learn how to replace the bulb.

And can clean-out that light niche behind it since those inevitably become trouble spots for algae anyways.

The fixture is not flooded, the niche is. Water should not get into the fixture where the bulb is located. It should only get between the niche and fixture.

Yea, sucks. I got the light out while the pool was drained below the light. Luckily (depending how you look at it) there was only one screw holding it in up top. Not looking forward to dipping my hand in cold water putting it back in though

That's pretty common, my new light is only held on by one screw.

Fyi, when you replace the bulb, you should also replace the gasket seal.
