Orientation of Return Jets

What should be the orientation be of my return jet fittings? I have 4 return jets with 3/4" eyes, a waterfall, and 2 skimmers. Waterfall and return jets are both full open at all times. Main drain does not work.

the answer is "it depends"

Buy a pack of ping pong balls or the shipping peanuts and throw them in the pool..

Watch and see what they do, if they bunch up in a corner move the eye around to get better flow

Empty water or soda bottles with the caps back on them also make good floats to test the water currents.

Do we need to try to consider current below the water surface also? Is there some rule of thumb (i.e. all facing downward to bottom of pool, or all facing up)?

Not for skimming action. Ideally you can find some way to get water moving downwards as well, so you don't end up with temperature stratification.
